About This Item
Step into the fascinating world of Fyodor Dostoevsky with Vintage Classics: The Double and the Gambler Paperback. This enchanting collection features two of Dostoevsky's most strikingly original short novels, expertly translated by the renowned Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. Immerse yourself in these gripping tales, which foreshadow the works of iconic authors like Kafka and Sartre. In The Double, you'll find yourself drawn into a surprisingly modern hallucinatory nightmare.
The story revolves around Goliadkin, a minor official who becomes aware of a mysterious doppelganger. This doppelganger not only shares his name and face but also begins displacing him among his friends and colleagues. It's a disturbing exploration of identity, paranoia, and the unsettling power of the mind. The Gambler, on the other hand, offers a stunning psychological portrait of a young man's exhilarating but destructive addiction to gambling.
Dostoevsky himself knew the dangers of this compulsion all too well, having once gambled away his own wife's wedding ring. Through the captivating protagonist Alexei Ivanovich, the author delves into the irresistible temptation to embrace the ultimate risks in life. This tale showcases Dostoevsky's keen understanding of human nature and his belief that the Russian national character is intertwined with the allure of danger.
