Magnetomatic Pipe Locator
The Magnetomatic Pipe & Cable Locator is a device used to locate underground pipes, cables and wires. Although it may resemble a standard dowsing rod, it is an actual locator, and it needs to be held so that the telescoping rod is parallel to the ground. The device is expensive but may prove to be a useful tool for homeowners or construction workers. Customers have reported mixed results using the Magnetomatic. Some have been able to find pipes and wires with ease, while others have not been successful. One user was able to pinpoint the rough depth of a located pipe by counting foot stomps, but this method is not very precise. The device works well for locating all types of drainage pipes, including hard plastic, corrugated and those made of steel and concrete. The Magnetomatic can detect copper and 1/2" cast iron water pipes buried more than 12 inches, but it is not always effective when gas lines are under a pavement. The device seems to be a hit or miss and may work better in certain situations than in others.
