As the Consequences of his choices unfold, Jamal's only Constant support, his best friend Tito, is also affected. While this book tackles heavy themes for a Newbery Honor Book, it is an important read that sheds light on the realities of young people being pulled into violent lifestyles. The character of Jamal feels authentic, and readers can easily empathize with his emotions and reactions. Although there is no happy ending, the book serves as a reminder of the Consequences that can arise from such situations.
